Intertextuality

Intertextuality is a term used to describe the visual/audio referencing between films. It reminds the audience of films they have seen in that genre as they borrow certain camera angles, aspects of mise en scene, snippets of sound or methods of editing  from other films.

The film psycho is a very good example of how intertextuality has been used. Many films have borrowed aspects from the shower scene in 'Psycho'.
Watching how all the different films borrow elements from psycho it has given me ideas of things my group can do to show our understanding of 'intertextuality' .

The main three I have studied are; what lies beneath, fatal attraction and the stepfather, which borrow elements from 'Psycho'.
What lies beneath:
Aspects borrowed from 'Psycho' were the white bath, shower head, white curtain and white tiles.

Fatal Attraction: This film also borrows the idea of the white tub, curtains, tiles and also the same exact knife. It was also observant that they copied the slow motion death, leaning back on the tiles and slowly falling down into the bath.

The Stepfather:This movie is another one which instils aspects borrowed from psycho. The shower curtains pining off, the same knife, the same white tiles, bath, curtains and also the same position of death and slow motion.
