Conventions of a Thriller

A Thriller is a genre that uses suspense, tension and excitement as the main elements. It has high levels of anticipation making the viewers excited about what is to come, it also makes the viewers have expectations as well as make them be uncertain about them.
To create the suspense, tension and excitement, thrillers use some codes and conventions. Nowadays, thrillers might possess a hybrid set of conventions from other genres. However, thrillers in general still share some main codes and conventions of the genre.
* Slow starts seem to be common in thrillers in order to create a suspenseful atmosphere.
* Spooky/suspenseful music
* Low key lighting, shadows
* Facial close-ups
* Obtrusive editing
* Sharp objects, weapons, mirrors
* A 'twist'
* Common fears
* Realistic setting
