Task 1 - Conventions of film openings

The opening of a film always have appropriate codes and conventions, usually in this order:

  • Introduce production company logo and distribution company logo:

  •  Title sequence - the method by which films present their title, key production and cast members utilising conceptual visuals and sound:

In 'Psycho' title sequence transitions are used as well as a scary tune that establishes the genre of the film.

  • Mood/tone of the film is established through sound, editing, mise en scene, camera work.

In 'Psycho' opening a establishing shot of the city is shown. The pan follows up to the building where the characters are, and zoom in to the window. This establishing shots set the scene.

  • Usually music is used to help to create the mood/tone.
  • Intended to book audience into the film through narrative.

In the opening of 'Trainspotting' a fun  atmosphere is created through the music and the actions. The voice over engages the audience with the narrative and it makes the characters look quite cool.

  •  Introduce  key characters:
In 'Trainspotting' opening the frame is frozen when introducing each character, and a graphic of their names appears in the screen next to them. The main character is introduced first.

These are the codes and conventions found in most of the film openings. The opening is crucial for the film because it is where the audience find out about the plot and the characters, as well as it is the opening's responsibility to keep the audience engaged and entertained and it establishes the genre of the film.
